A fresh start

As some of you might remember Atelier Oursonne has not just been the weird name of this blog but rather the weird name of the business I had founded years ago in London.

When we moved back to Austria, I closed it down officially and was not entirely sure if I should start again freshly in Vienna or not. So, whilst I was thinking about it, life took some unexpected turns and the question to business or not to business was suddenly less important and had slowly faded away.

But a couple of months ago, one of my former major clients of yoga bags contacted me with an order…… which caught me slightly unprepared. My first instinct was to just turn it down but then I thought that I might as well at least use up the material that I had still left in the various corners of the house. And what can I say, I relapsed –  making these few bags got me totally hooked again and I have officially registered a trade in Austria.

As things are a bit more complicated over here, it is currently officially only for “making bags from unusual and recycled material” – whatever that means.

I will also be allowed to make hats, either knitted or sewn and baby accessories such as scarfs, playmats, changing mats or whatever comes to your mind and I am really planning on adding a few exciting products to my business.

I have already bought the most beautiful fabrics and I am ready to go now that the time consuming toddler is supposed to be in nursery.

Since these yoga bags are meant to be for grown ups, I have also added personalised drawstring bags to my range and as you can imagine, playing with cute fabrics and childish motives is just right up my street.

Some fabrics don’t need anything else….

Others are a bit more boring and need some extra help…

and of course the whole point in a personalised bag is having the name on it…

As you can see, it is all about mix and match, colours and patterns but believe it or not, I can also do subtle and harmonious if asked politely….

So, if you feel the need of having a drawstring bag with your name on it, check out my rekindled etsy shop or contact me directly.

Back to December

No, I haven’t forgotten the posts I had been promising you back in December (my December not everybody else’s) Remember? I owe you two posts about choosing the perfect gift. And ta da, today you’ll get the first as I finally had to edit all the pictures involved for another exciting project. (which means that this blog and its readers were apparently not important enough for me to sit down and get it done. Sorry.

Prepare for some self-praise and braging as I am really rather impressed by my own cleverness in this one.

So, the task was to find a gift, that shows on one side how grateful I am for what the team in question has done without, on the other side, ignoring the fact that I am not actually special for them, just one out of many. Whatever gift I can come up with won’t be kept, realistically. So a cheap and non bragging item that can ideally be used up or is a useful item in everydays life without taking up any space. But still having a personal touch. Obviously.

So, what could tick more boxes than an individual cotton tote bag with goodies for all sorts of situations: mandalas, sudokus and cross words (including a personal one) to kill too much waiting time, a bit of coffee and tea for keeping awake and relaxing (whatever is needed), a piece of chocolate for comfort and a silly joke for when you need a laugh. And a card with a few personal words. So, the content doesn’t cost much and will get used up. Nothing embarrasing will take away space on someones shelf. The individual cotton bag will remind people of the crazy sewing lady and her family. In Austria, cotton bags are a huge thing. You know, recycling and sustainability and all that stuff. Plus it can be used as a stylish accessory. But if people choose not to use their gift bag, then never mind, it is just a cotton bag. So, I can honestly say, I could not have come up with a better idea than that. Really. I did underestimate the workload a little bit and I do have to admit that the rather monotone work did get a bit boring at some point. But it was well worth it, that’s for sure. But enough talking, here they are:

I know, that one picture is rubbish, you can’t really recognise anything.

20170813_103705

Do you want to see another one? Yes? Ok.

20170813_103250

Another one? Really? Okaay.

20170813_103223

Ok, I just show you the whole lot.

“Technical” details:

I have used a mix of classic application (secure zig zag) and freestyle machine embroidery.

I have chosen the fabrics for the “2A” for particular reasons, some as a reminder of my family, some because I knew of a particular interest or hobby of the future owner, some just because I thought the person might find it pretty.

The pictures in the top left hand are symbols for the profession of the presentee.

As I said, I am for once totally happy with the outcome of the whole project. It ticked all the boxes and I think, it was also very appreciated.

For the last remaining “perfect gift” post, I can not yet give you any details, pictures have not yet been taken so it might take forever a while. It is very likely that I’ll show you other exciting projects first. For example the secret of this box:

Scrap Sunday: bare necessities

You are probably wondering why you haven’t heard from me in a while. Or probably you aren’t. In any case, I just came here to tell you that I am not able to post for another while. Because I am in internetfree land. Well internetdifficult land. I am currently in the middle of a 4 weeks sewing detox programme in the Black Forest in Germany. I meant to use this time to post about all those lovely things I made during a little sewing frenzy leading up to this detox stay. But uploading those pictures would take weeks. So I will wait and post them when back to civilisation.

However, as a good blogger, I do have a little Scrap project for you. I came here with a box of wool and needles. No one said anything about knitting detox. On the contrary, I thought it would be lovely to go back to knitting if I have to leave my sewing machine behind.

After a day or two here I realised that I often have nothing to carry keys, phone (to go to the only spot with reception, surprisingly near the Reception) and money so after a couple of days with a big cotton tote bag (initially my knitting bag), I knitted a small bag, using the scraps that I had brought for the children and their knitting fork)

Sorry for the star dust – it seemed appropriate for the idyllic Black Forest. And I am frankly just very proud of my recent discoveries on my phone. Well the little one showed me.

With my real knitting project, I did not get very far yet, due to a lack of time:

This is my project: a jumper for myself by Atelier Alfa.

This is how far I got in the last two weeks:

See you in a couple of weeks!

Scrap Sunday: Travelling again

So that wedding (yes, I am still going on about it, but it really was a nice evening and possibly the highlight of my social life this year).

Obviously we needed a gift. I like giving money and I think this has become the most common wedding gift around here. But I don’t like to just put money in an envelope or handing over vouchers for a department store. I like finding a nice or fun way of hiding the money. This time I went for another travel wallet, slightly more advanced than the first version. I found it suitable as a wedding gift holder as people usually go on a honeymoon after their big day, isn’t it.

Waterproof material this time. It just looks a bit more professional.

One zip pocket for I don’t know what.

Lots of different types of pockets…

… for tickets, cards and pens. And passports. What would a travel wallet be without passports? I made them both big enough to keep at least two passports each (actually I didn’t try more) so 4 (or more) in total.

I still don’t know if a travel wallet is really a life saver but in any case it is good enough to transport a money gift.

Since it was a wedding plus one, I thought I could use up some of my fabric and make some cute toddler cloths. (I realised toddler sizes are really perfect to use up those left overs of bigger sized hoodies, shirts… – I always end up with a narrow yet longish stripe of fabric)

Now, obviously one might wonder why a woman who only gets married in a normal wedding dress, would actually deserve special handmade clothes for her offspring – clearly she is a hopeless case fashionwise. But then this is the only way, she could possibly develop some kind of fashion sense. Plus, believe it or not, her husband seems to be a male fashionista. He attended the after wedding family breakfast in a fresh and clean fitted shirt. Very elegant, I have to say. He tried to play it down and pretended he had forgotten to bring a normal T-Shirt with him. But he can’t trick me, he was just trying to take the embarrassment of all others, terribly underdressed in T-Shirts and jeans.

So, I am sure, he will appreciate my very tasteful toddler hooded vest and trousers, whereas his (otherwise lovely) wife… well, it was probably a case of casting perls before swine but one should never abandon hope.

I didn’t make them as a set (I don’t like sets) but they are actually linked by the same cuff material. I bought the Zebras last year on sale and intended to make trousers for Mr No Thank You. But, guess what, the material was to scruffy so this year, I used it to make two pairs of trousers, one for the wedding boy and one for Mr No Thank You’s little brother who can’t decline politely yet.

And guess what, if you have 1m of fabric and make two toddler sized trousers, you have just enough for another scrap project. So watch this space 🙂
