Progress update

I have started to write this progress update a few days ago, before the shockingย  attacks in Paris and initially I found it inappropriate to post about silly things like crafts as if nothing has happened. But I guess it is the opposite, we can’t stop doing the things that we like doing. A lot did happen and it doesn’t only concern people in Paris or France. It concerns all of us and the European idea of humanity, no borders, freedom and tolerance has been threatened once again (in addition to the inability of the political system to deal with the refugee crisis with dignity and as a unity).

So my thoughts are with those who have lost innocent family members or friends who were enjoying a nice time out. I really hope together we will manage to ensure a future for our children in a world of freedom and tolerance.

Following the progress post as I had initially written it – happiness and sadness so close together.

Once again, I have missed one or two posts on Sunday, but I have been rather busy lately and I guess, it is time to update you a bit.

So, as you might remember, the extended family has been waiting for a couple of babies to arrive and I am pleased to say that they finally did. One more finally than the other.

Whilst I was busy waiting and my mum – who had come over to be on stand by for childcare – was busy rescheduling and rescheduling her flight back home, I made a few little things to keep my mind off the waiting game.

So, I have started to use up the left overs from the baby blankets – I still haven’t written a proper post about them, have I? But you might remember this progress picture:

Anyway, I have started to knit cardigans, using a wrongly ordered blue merino (the colour was too close to the dark blue one I had already bought) as a base colour, adding some stripes in the blanket left overs. A third one with green stripes is still in the making.

I also made a few more hats for my nephew and nieces using up some jersey. They requested beanies and as I am obsessed with the idea of reversible hats (no ugly seams inside plus getting to use two lovely fabrics instead of just one), I went for the version with ribbing at the bottom. I am not entirely convinced about the ribbing but I haven’t seen them on the heads in question. The pattern is the same klimperklein e-book as before.

IMG_4032 IMG_4038

The stripy one is for my oldest nephew, both fabrics are left overs from shirts that I had actually made for him, somehow I did not photograph the red and blue version

IMG_4037

Then we have the girly one, left over from my daughters clown leggings and one future left over from a lovely fabric that I bought for myself.

And last but definitely not least the hat for the 4 year old. Left overs from shirt and leggings for my son and future left over of many little boy and baby boy things.

My husband loves the fireman one. He said he wants one for himself. I laughed politely. He said, he is serious. The man who never wears the boring stripy shirt I made for him. Clearly I do completely misjudged his taste ๐Ÿ™‚ And I guess, we are a perfect match.

I also made a corduroy dress for my daughter using a Burda pattern.

IMG_4148 Kleid

Again a fabric that I kind of bought for myself. I actually want to have that dress (Told you, perfect match ๐Ÿ™‚ ), well maybe a slightly more grown up version (basically without the rig rag and the buttons. But definitely with the pockets). But I don’t quite see the corduroy working as a breastfeeding dress plus I am planning to be covered in milk and vomit for the next few months, so I decided to make a dress for my daughter to be able to enjoy the fabric.

Maybe one word to the pattern: The front is not put on fold but two pieces sewn together which makes sense for one of the proposed fabric mix versions but not for this one. I really wonder why I am still not confident enough to see that right from the beginning and alter the pattern according to my needs.

Oh, and before all of that I had also made two more bags as birthday presents. One for the lovely mother of the little girl I had made the very first one. As she kept using her daughters bag, I thought it was about time to make her her own.

IMG_3966 IMG_3959 IMG_3961 IMG_3963

and one for my daughter’s birthday. She has basically asked for it since May, when I had made the very first one of the series. It only took me about 6 months. Not bad. And I think I have now more or less ticked all the things of my to do list I had posted a couple of weeks or months ago.IMG_3964

IMG_3965

As you can see, going 10 days past due date made me finish quite a few things. When everything was done, all I could do, was going to my knitting class, listening to a few horror induction stories, which seemed to scare the young man so much that a couple of hours later I had to rush (and I mean to rush) to hospital to quickly (and I mean quickly) give birth to a beautiful baby. 10 days after his due date and 2 days after the appearance of my equally beautiful new nephew who – much better behaved – was only a couple of days late.

And obviously it is now time for a new to do list, especially as I am unable to remember anything at all.

Progress update

I know, I know, it is Sunday and I am supposed to post about a project made from scraps. But not only do I have a long list of big, non scrappy, projects still to make in the next two weeks or so but I was also busy cleaning the house last week. Some might call it nesting, some might call it a perfect opportunity to get rid of dust mites and what they leave behind because we had an unexpected week of summer. Can you imagine, a whole week of sun (or at least no rain) and temperatures around 15 degrees and even higher! I can hardly remember more than 10 days this summer which were actually more summery than these ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway, I washed all the bedding, hovered, dusted, steam cleaned the carpets and there was just not enough time for preparing clever blog posts.

So let me just tick some of the boxes of my to do list:

  • birthday shirt for my 10 year old nephew, pattern from pattydoo, I didn’t realise that he had grown so much that mistakenly I thought my usual pattern wasn’t catering for his size anymore but luckily pattydoo has now a teen version too (I guess my nephew wasn’t the only child growing out of the children’s version). There is still a lot left over fabric as the fabric is very wide and those children don’t need the whole width. Especially if I am using a plain fabric for the sleeves ๐Ÿ™‚ As you can see, the pictures are taken before ironing but you might also notice that the neckline is much neater than usually as I have added a little strip of fabric to hide the seam between hood and back neckline.IMG_3867 IMG_3868
  • T-shirt for my husband, requested and chosen by my children, also a pattydoo pattern, and in a very similar colour scheme. Luckily I produced a lot of left over fabric here too ๐Ÿ™‚ as I stupidly bought the amount of fabric that was suggested for a shirt using the same fabric for sleeves and body. It is a supersoft jersey and I will definitely make good use of theseย  scraps. I don’t think I will ever be able to show you a picture of the shirt actually being worn – after all we are talking of the father of Mr No, thank youย  ๐Ÿ™‚ (To be honest, it does not fit him very well, the sleeves are rather tight so it looks a bit odd in his size)IMG_3702
  • cardigan for my aunt: pattern from Filati Classici Nr 8, pattern nr 20. Yarn: Lana Grossa Alta Moda Super Baby Fine, buttons from a shop in Notting Hill, unfortunately plastic, looking like wooden ones. Process of making it was split in a few sections that took roughly the equal amounts of time: knitting most of it, apart from the tiny bit when I was running out of yarn, finishing the knitting, sewing the thing together and then buying buttons and actually sewing them on, which was clearly the hardest part and needed the most mental preparation IMG_3859 IMG_3861 IMG_3862
  • 98 knitted squares for two baby blankets, all made from Lana Grossa Cool Wool big, 100% merino. Squares for blanket nr 1 (on the right) are ready and even sort of blocked since ages, I finally started sewing them together yesterday.ย ย IMG_3866

And finally a nice imageย  just because I had the opportunity to take a picture of four monkeys trying to escape their cage and it just looked like a perfect advert or something from an Atelier Oursonne catalogue as somehow they were wearing a lot of the stuff that I had made for them in the past ๐Ÿ™‚20151003_130655

And finally (this time for real), I need to put myself a bit under pressure by publishing my plans for this week:

  • definitely finishing baby blanket no 1
  • definitely making the dolly carrier for my niece
  • maybe making the birthday jacket for my nephew
  • posting all of these by Friday

Scrap Sunday: Nothing left or why it actually does make sense to always buy more… just in case

Today I want to show you a project that I am about to finish. Except that I can’t. Because I ran out of yarn. Because I tried to shop sensibly. To avoid huge amounts of scrap yarn.

So, I am knitting a cardigan for my auntie. In lovely Lana Grossa Alta Moda Super Baby Fine, a light, soft and warm yarn indeed.

I found the pattern in the latest issue of Filati Classici. No 8.

Patten no 20 for Solo Cashmere 110. Probably also a magnificent yarn but not only did the local yarn shop not have it in stock when I was on holiday in Austria but it also doesn’t seem the right choice for a cardigan, when I am not entirely sure about pattern, size, fit or colour.

Anyway I thought as both had roughly the same yardage and Alta Moda was meant to be knitted with slightly bigger needles, I could replace 11 balls with 11 balls and did not buy the usual “just in case”

But I should have:IMG_3636

Can you see? Just about 3 cm of the shoulder and the neckline are missing.

IMG_3638

Such a shame. But before you panic, my mother in law has already been to the shop and gotten me another ball. Just a matter of time and I will be able to finish. But I have definitely learned my lesson. I will now always buy one too many… just in case โ˜บ

Learning from mistakes

With the end of the (school) year being so near and the associated imminent closure of our nursery, I am getting quite nostalgic. To avoid being depressed I thought I’ll turn this rummaging in the past into something positive by looking at the things that went terribly wrong (don’t get too excited, nothing to gossip, I am just talking about craft projects, the actual purpose of this blog) in order to learn something from it.

This is actually a random selection, I guess there would be many more but I haven’t always taken pictures.

What is wrong with these things? I am glad you’re asking. I was thinking hard and long about it. They haven’t been worn EVER. Or just a few times in some cases. And what they actually have in common: They were all made for the same person. Who will always try on things happily whilst I am making them but just politely says: No thank you! when they are finished. Have I learned from it? No, I haven’t.

I have just stupidly made a beautiful jacket using a klimperklein pattern. Or rather e-book with lots of step by step instructions.

You might think that this is a really nice jacket and that anybody would love to wear it. Well, you’re wrong. “No, thank you. Maybe I’ll wear it tomorrow!” Still polite but making me hope for another opportunity which won’t really happen is actually rather cruel. Do I sound bitter? No, don’t worry. I am totally over it. Really. And let’s face it, there is another very important thing that all these things have in common. It was always me choosing the particular project and even fabric. Not once I had actually been asked to make all this useless stuff. So I guess, the only person to blame is myself.

So lets quickly look at the bright sight. The e-book is amazing, it offers lots of choices, different pockets, with or without lining,….

I have in fact made already a second one, same concept but different fabric and size. And this one actually gets worn a lot (fabric chosen by the jacket owner)

We’ll see if I have learned anything, next project will be something made of a fabric bought on request. I’ll keep you posted.

PS: I just got a picture of the birthday boy. He liked the pick and mix shirt so much, he did not want to take it off at night and slept in it ๐Ÿ™‚
