Scrap Sunday: No jokes today, sorry

This was meant to be a really funny post full of anecdotes about a certain person in my life who is slightly, just slightly hypochondriac. But to be honest I don’t feel like making jokes these days. I am shocked and sad about the UK’s EU referendum. So many things went wrong, I don’t even know where to start and yet it is so simple. The European Union is like a marriage, built to make us all stronger for the good times but even more for the bad times. It was far to important to use it for silly power games by short sighted little boys on the playground politicians who are then all shocked by the result and its consequences.

Anyway, this is not the place to discuss this, so lets go back to Scrap Sunday.

I found a nice little project to use up some scrap fabric. A little wallet for your homeopathic remedies. I followed the Globbi freebook by madiGreen on farbenmix.

Unfortunately I followed the instructions too closely as actually my homeopathic remedies seem to come in bigger containers than the ones used in the e-book so the result is a bit tight.

Plus, when I ironed it flat before top stitching, the iron was a bit too hot for the woven trim and shrank it a little bit which subsequently gathered the fabric a bit. (a lot of bits in that sentence).

Other than that I am very pleased with the result and I find it an extremely useful gift for people who pick up deadly diseases such as rhinopharyngitis like others catch a cold.

It also reminded me that I should pay more attention to Scrap Sunday and think a bit harder about small projects. So watch this space! (She said boastfully whilst ignoring the fact that The Move was happing in about a month)

Scrap Sunday: Fundraising with scrap fabric

Today is a bit more serious than usual.

One of my friends is part of a women’s circle which meets monthly. I think it started to support each other in all those little and not so little daily issues but now they have decided to organise a fundraising event to support other mothers and their children – refugees in Calais.

I was very much looking forward to be part of this community event and to contribute time and skills but we will already be away for a team baptism. So all I can do it to invite others to support this project by going to the fundraising event  – a fun family event with arts and crafts, a raffle, food and more.

For those who would like to contribute but are unable to attend, there is also a fundraising page where you can  donate as much or little as you can give. And obviously please share all these links through all your social media thingies.

And whilst I can not physically attend and help at the festival, I have still prepared a crafts activity that people will be able to carry out without me supervising them 🙂 :

fabric mosaic cards

I have been busy cutting small scraps into even tinier pieces, naively hoping it would reduce my stash significantly

And I made a sample card.

If you are unsure how to get from picture A to picture B, then check out this brilliantly written tutorial by my first and only guest writer.

Apart from this amazing activity I will also donate two pieces of handmade children clothes. I just don’t know yet if I will make them and donate them to be auctioned or if I should donate vouchers, as then the winner could choose size, style and colours, isn’t it. I am just not sure if that doesn’t get too complicated.

Might be a timing issue anyway, as I still need to make one baptism present sun hat and a dress for the mother of the other baptism team member. And we will be leaving on Thursday. I better get to work now.

Scrap Sunday: 80s pop queen

In my surprise bag by Michas Stoffecke I got a piece of grey jersey with kind of sparkly stars. Not my thing but extremely cool for a 6 year old. 6 is not little anymore as we have recently discovered. 6 is the new 13.

Anyway, in the Klimperklein book there is this pattern for a simple skirt with ribbing at the waist and I thought this would actually give a great 80s trash pop look.IMG_4818

It is far from being my favourite piece of work but I think the fabrics and the pattern are a perfect match. And in combination with a sparkly Hello Kitty top definitely a perfect 80s look. Not that I would know what 80s are supposed to look like. I was obviously not there 😉

Scrap Sunday: Remember how lucky you are

Do you sometimes need a reminder that actually you are a really happy person and should stop complaining about little things? I certainly do. I guess because I am Austrian. Austrians loooove moaning. We have lots of words for it. I am also quite good at wallowing in self-pity. Especially after tiring nights. And that is when I need a gently reminder that actually it is all good. Really good. I only seem to see that when I hear from other who aren’t as lucky as me.

Someone I actually don’t know that well just had a premature baby and I just wanted to make something nice for her.

I found two lovely freebooks for premature baby clothes but only used the one for the wrap cardigan.

IMG_4784IMG_4787 IMG_4786 It is incredible how tiny this piece is when you see it next to your healthy and well nourished 5 months old.

Clearly this is one of the more useful and meaningful ideas that I have ever published for Scrap Sunday and I will definitely enquire in the local hospitals to see if there is a need for premature baby clothes and what kind of donations they would want. It would be nice to know that actually some of these odd small pieces in my scrap box could make someone else happy.
