out of proportion

small and big

small and big

A couple of weeks ago, I have knitted my first soft toy following a pattern from the last Let’s knit issue. It was meant to be for my nephew but my children seemed to disagree and as I found it a bit too big anyway I decided to knit a smaller one…. and as you can see, it has been a while since I have last used my maths brain. I don’t want to bore you with the details of my mistake, nothing to be proud off after all, but the head turned out too small…. which I only really accepted once it was stitched on to the rest of the body. It looks funny and I do prefer the nose for which I have used a few simple stitches with brown yarn rather than knit a nose and stitch it on.

So this one has been the fourth soft toy of my life, and although I do like the rather funny look of them I am still not a fan of the time consuming sewing together and finishing. So I am guessing that those pieces will really stay unique and you can count yourself lucky if you are ever the proud owner of a soft toy made by me 🙂

Stitch Samples

Stitch Samples

After years as pupil, student and teacher, September has always been more of a new beginning than January. Maybe a bit less in the recent years but September 2013 is definitely the beginning of something new as I will be going back to teaching. But this time it is not French nor Chemistry, it’s knitting.

As I have mentioned before, I will be giving knitting classes within the Children Centres in Kensington and Chelsea and the first one will start on Monday.

So I am actually quite busy preparing the classes. My students will be mothers of small children, so probably always busy and tired from sleepless nights. So the knitting might not be on top of their list so I should keep that in mind.

I am thinking of letting them practice the stitches and produce samples rather than just letting them knit an unwearable scarf. I have been inviting people to those classes and quite a few are traumatised by past knitting experience and it always seems to involve a long stretchy thing. So I really want to avoid scarfs.

I also want them to produce samples of their stitches and techniques for future reference as they might not have enough time now but will pick it up again a bit later.

Once they got a bit more confident, we will knit rather small items as I want to make sure that things can actually be finished to get the full satisfaction.

The courses only last 5 or 6 weeks and I am almost certain that most of my students will miss at least one class, that’s just how it is if you have small children.

The smallest pretty item I could think of is actually a garter stitch bow which can easily be made into a hairband, either by attaching it to an Alice band or by a simple crocheted cord. I can only hope they all have little girls rather than boys… although the same might be used as a bow tie….

Or a tiny bag or a case for the mobile phone would be easy too.

I am also currently trying out soft toy patterns to see if they would be suitable. Somehow it would be an ideal project. Lots of small pieces with a variety of tasks, casting on, binding off, increases and decreases, sewing pieces together,…. and literally everyone of my students will have at least one small child who would probably be delighted.

I have made one rather big bear, I found the pattern in the last Let’s knit issue, or rather in the complementary booklet with free patterns. It is not too bad, slightly too big I think for my purpose, very classic though and reminds me of the Mr Bean teddy which I always found very cute.

The other toy is a bit smaller, either a rabbit or a bear, depending on the ears, it is lovely too. I really like the shape of the head and the floppy ears of my rabbit. It is written by April Cromwell. She has a great blog too. bysmallmeans.wordpress.com

This one might be a bit too tricky to sew together, so I will have to think about it. Or I will end up writing my own pattern.

I will see how people are doing the first two weeks and then we will decide what to knit as project.

So, I am quite busy now but I have also been busy over summer. As we have been visiting friends and family back home, I actually had to produce a few gifts for babies. So I did a few new Versa tunics as they are highly effective, quick to knit, cute to look at and long to wear as they “shrink” from dress to top.

The only boy in the list of babies to meet and greet got a Little Rascal. As my daughter found the plain sweater “boring” I added a little orange car which got her approval.

I also made a few scarfs. A too small for me Baktus in Sirdar Smiley Stripes, a Clapo-ktus for a wedding in a beautiful  Wool-Silk-blend hand-dyed by Dye for Yarn and triangular scarf in my own design, again that great Yarn from Dye for Yarn, in the most gorgeous red.

So, I guess it’s not a surprise that I didn’t actually have time to keep this blog up to date. Sorry for this long post, I really should post more regularly.

Happy birthday!

matching outfits

It’s my niece’s birthday today so the right day to post about the cardigans that I have knitted for her and her doll. The girl’s cardigan is custom made after a few emails back and forth with my sister in law. And as my daughter quite likes it when I make something matching for her and her doll (like the pictured strawberry skirt, which I find rather cute myself) I thought my niece might enjoy dressing her doll in a matching cardigan.

I really like the design and the colour combination of this “final” version but I had something completely different in mind just after agreeing on the colours. In fact, I was convinced enough to just knit another cardigan which I will put in my etsy shop.

So I have used the same colours but I chose the light beige (linen) as a kind of background colour with wide stripes in pink, blue and green (or raspberry, atlantic and gooseberry). So none of the colours really sticks out, whereas the cardigan for my niece is clearly a pink one with thin stripes in other colours. I find both really nice and can’t really tell which one I would prefer. So up to you to choose your favourite.

For the shop version I have also made a matching doll cardigan and a tiny bag. As far as I know toddlers can not have enough little bags to take their little treasures on a trip or just to play with them at home.

I find those little supplements make hand knitted items for children even more special. You certainly don’t get that on the high-street.

Twins

I have shown those two cardigans already in my last post but as their new owners have finally made their appearance into the world I thought it is a good reason for a proper post – congratulations again to the happy parents.

When it comes to this blog, I have been a bit lazy lately… I have written many posts…. but only in my head and I really should get them online rather than wasting my time with knitting 🙂

But back to the cardigans. I’ve used again the Little Rascals pattern by Julia Stanfield.

As I made them for newborns I used this super soft gorgeous Rowan purelife organic cotton. I find it really special and as it is discontinued, I will really save my stock for very special new born outfits.

I made these for a set of twins, a boy and a girl, and initially planned to make them completely matching, just in different colours but changed my mind half way through. After all, the whole point of a hand knitted item is to be unique and very special. They have still similar enough features to be recognized as a set that belongs together but each one is individual – like those twins are. They belong together but they are also an individual each.

I decorated them both, the blue one with a simple whale, the pink one with a more eye-catching flower.

To enhance the floral cuteness of the pink one, I added little flower buttons, to keep the blue one simple, I chose grey buttons and made only one big bold stripe in the middle rather than thin ones like on the pink one.

Unfortunately, I was unable to take good pictures…. the longer I am going to my photography class the more difficult it seems :)I had to give up eventually as the cardigans had to get to the babies before they will grow out of them.
