Door 8 – Is it worth it?

When I first moved to London, I used to order my – up until then favourite – yarn brand in Germany. It’s Lana Grossa and they do have very nice things. I used mainly their Merino range Cool Wool which comes in a variety of thickness and great colours. But are the high delivery costs really worth it?

So I went to John Lewis and bought some Debbie Bliss Rialto and realised that this is just as soft ๐Ÿ™‚ The colour range is more limited and has more subtle shades, maybe a bit too “grown up” for my children projects.

This year, I thought I shouldย  buy a bit cheaper, especially if I knit something for the shop to be able to reduce the prices. But I realised quickly that cheap Merino is actually not as soft as the slightly more expensive brands, so I have to say: Yes, it is worth it!

So I am back to Debbie Bliss, still missing a bit the Lana Grossa Cool Wool though.

Door 7 – No, thank you

IMG_1344I have finished the very colourful dungarees for my son yesterday.

He had been very interested in the whole sewing process and found the fabric pretty but when I asked him if he would like to put them on, he said – with a little wave of his hand – “no thank you”. Well I guess, at least he is a very polite young man ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway, after all those pretty skirts and dresses for my daughter, I had to try to make something pretty for him too and I can tick this one off my list.

Today and tomorrow will be all about baking (apart from updating my shop). The dough for the gingerbread is already in the fridge, and the finished nuts triangles fill the house with a beautiful smell.

Door 6 – Nikolaus

Today’s door is actually hiding a coupon code which you will find at the end of this post

But first I’d like to add just a little bit more confusion to the international Christmas traditions…

Nikolaus is coming on the 6th of december and bringing a few tangerines, nuts, peanuts, a bit of chocolate… and two Hello Kitties ๐Ÿ™‚ Ok, maybe the last bit isn’t really a tradition. I really didn’t think it through when introducing Christmas traditions to my children and I wanted to keep our Austrian ones, especially as we thought we weren’t going to stay here in London for too many years. So we have Nikolaus (who looks a bit like Father Christmas) coming on the 6th. In our case he only leaves a small surprise on the balcony rather than visiting properly due to the circumstances, and we have Baby Jesus (who I always imaginedย  like an angel, no one has ever seen him) bringing presents on the 24th. And now there are Santa Clauses and Father Christmases everywhere, and I am slightly worried that it is just a few people too many to still be believable. So far it doesn’t matter, all presents seem to be welcome though ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyway, enjoy 20% off everything in my shop with the coupon code NIKOLAUS13 . It is valid this weekend only, I will put a few more listings today and tomorrow. Have a lovely day ๐Ÿ™‚

Door 5 – Trying to be fair or A long day ahead

IMG_1342Today will be all about sewing. My son is always jealous of my daughters colourful dresses and skirts and I have to admit I have been sewing and knitting much more things for her than for him.

So I will be making him dungarees out of the most colourful corduroy I could find in the fabric shops in Shepherds Bush. It was not easy, there is really not much for boys.

I am using a pattern from farbenmix . They have beautiful things there, patterns from independent designers with lots of support on their website, ribbons,…

I have recently started a sewing class on Thursdays where you sew your own project and the teacher will support you with whatever you need. I have already prepared a bit at home to get as much as possible done in the class.
And hopefully my son will be happy with it. Oh and guess what, my daughter has already announced that she wants dungerees as well… just to be fair ๐Ÿ™‚
