Scrap Sunday: Which one is which?

This week I can not actually show a finished project, I will need more time but here is at least a picture to show you how well I am using up scraps πŸ™‚

As you can see, it is not quite enough at the pointy end but I will manage.

As you might remember (or not), I have dedicated my Friday sewing class/club to Scrap Sunday (in order to actually be able to post on Sunday) but as almost everybody else is making a skirt I also wanted to make one. So I am using a fabric that I bought about a year ago in my typical fabric shopping manner:

I go to the shops to buy fabric for a certain purpose (in that case something for my children) and then suddenly something completely different catches my eye. In that case a beautiful burgundy corduroy. So I thought a meter might not be enough (for a possible short dress), 1.50 might be better. Just to be safe. And as it is so beautiful, I then bought 2m as you never know.

So, since a year I have almost a meter of scrap waiting for another purpose. (Is 1 meter x 1.40 really scrap?) – time for a skirt.

And as in my Tuesday fashion course we have been talking about godets (extra piece of fabric, to add volume), I thought some kind of cute patterned fabric might just give a simple corduroy skirt this extra kick. And for that purpose, unfortunately a tiny fat quarter bought on my trip to Oxford a couple of weeks ago seemed the perfect match. I think it is a bit too precious to be used for such a purpose. So, I was really thrifty when it came to cutting. And I even consider to keep this tiny piece here but I can not yet imagine it could be used πŸ™‚

Because of my still secret big project, I will really have to keep the skirt project out of my week and will only work on it on the Fridays, so we will see how long it will take me, but just to give you an idea, this is how I want it to look, well, 8 of these panels.

Scrap Sunday – I can’t really tell

IMG_2682I am currently very busy with a big new sewing project but I don’t want to tell until it is finished. Well, until Step 1 of a new adventure is finished.

It includes the use up of a very loved and precious fabric so it is perfect for Scrap Sunday – except that I can not talk about it.

All I can say is that I have this piece of fabric since a few years. I walked past a Marimekko shop and discovered those beautiful finnish designs. I walked straight in to buy some fabric. I had cushion covers for the children’s bedroom planned since a while. When I discovered the price (over Β£40 a meter, but very good quality also), I had to reduce the planned amount of at least 500m to twice 60cm πŸ™‚

I was very thrifty when cutting out and made two almost normal sized cushion covers and two smaller, rectangular ones. Which left me with two long stripes of roughly 15cm width each. I was always wondering what I could possibly make out of this tiny piece, especially as my favourite one (big round shapes) doesn’t even show the complete pattern anymore, it is cut right through the circles. But I could certainly not throw it away.

Anyway, now, years after, I finally got the perfect opportunity to use one of them as stripy appliques on something I can’t talk about. I will manage to squeeze out two one of a kind special edition examples of my new project and it looks a-ma-zing.

I promise I will show you more in a couple of days. Really πŸ™‚

Oh and don’t forget the coupon code UPDATE11 if you want to get 15% off in my shop until Friday only.

Scrap Sunday: urgently needed or another cheat scrap sunday post

The good thing about scrap Sunday is that suddenly I seem to be going away for the weekend a lot. So from that point of view the challenge has been a huge success. From the quality of posts probably not. But I do not have to read them so never mind πŸ™‚

This time I am enjoying the lovely English coast, I finally had a proper Cream Tea (lovely but I did fancy the children’s selection with brownie more) and I had lots of time to knit hats for the shop whilst worrying about the content of this scrap post. I did consider to take a picture of the 5 cm long crochet chain which I found in my bag. My daughter had made it. She isn’t even 5 so hasn’t got enough patience to crochet anything longer than that, but it is still a wonderfully useful example of how to use up scrap yarn πŸ˜‰

But yesterday morning said crochet genius woke up with a stiff neck and was crying and sobbing a lot (I guess mainly out of irritation)

So I wrapped a muslin square around her neck (I knew I should pack some of these incredibly live saving pieces of fabric in our suitcase) and quickly knitted her a sort of neck warmer during the drive to our outing. I had to finish the last few rows on board of the old fashioned steam train which seemed a very good knitting location anyway and she was ready to enjoy the fresh sea breeze πŸ™‚

I put it over the muslin square as it is a bit wide for the neck. On purpose, as I am planning to Β open the cast off and continue it into a hat or actually … maybe I will make it even a little bit longer and keep it as neck warmer and maybe add a lining .

So technically it is once again not a scrap project but I did use less than a ball and it is still better than a 5 cm crochet chain πŸ™‚

Scrap Sunday: Dressed for night and day

I’ve got this custom order for teddy trousers a few weeks ago and could just not be bothered with the whole fiddly concept. But I have finally found the time (and it took two attempts – I hadn’t measured the little fellow and totally underestimated the size of his huge bottom πŸ™‚ )

So, I have this fabric combination since three years precisely (more or less precisely). That had been another request from the same customer: Baby carrier (my idea) with aeroplane pattern (her idea). So now, the fabrics had to be used to make teddy trousers, using the one fabric for the front and the other one for the back.

And before you start laughing at the worn out bear in the picture I’d like to point out that it is actually mine, it just got somehow in the hands of a young teddy thief.

Here it comes:

4 pictures to show the tiniest trousers ever might seem slightly excessive but I guess it is a case of a biased photographer πŸ™‚

And coming back to the actual subject of using up scrap fabrics: This has probably been the use up of the tiniest amount of fabric so far (for me, not speaking globally) so a well deserved Scrap Sunday project πŸ™‚
